It Ain't Fair 2009 [recap]

The second installment of It Ain’t Fair lived up to all expectations, making its debut earlier this month. Calling on the art community for participation, OHWOW assembled an international group show comprised of over 30 artists that they felt were creating the most relevant work today. Amongst the selection of renowned artists were contributions from Scott Campbell, Julia Chiang, Peter Chung, Michael Genovese, Todd James, KAWS, Terence Koh, Ari Marcopoulos, Neck Face, Keiichi Nitta, Jose Parla, Kenny Scharf, and Agathe Snow amongst many others. Yue Minjun [Italy]

Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun brings his iconic Terracotta Warriors to a group exhibition in Italy, which opened last week at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. Along with his wide mouthed creations, Yue Minjun is also showcasing a series of oil paintings amongst 180 other works by a legion of Chinese artists. “China – Contemporary Revival” runs through February 7th, 2010.

Neon Monster [print by Dalek]

As part of their Artist Editions series, San-Francisco-based art and design collective, Neon Monsterreleases a new print by Dalek. The 9-color silkscreen print measures 38″ x 50″, and is limited to 50, each signed and numbered by the artist. You can purchase it through Neon Monster’s website.

Opening night (December 2nd, 2009) will be highlighted by the screening of Cyprien Gaillard’s Cities of Gold and Mirrors accompanied by a performance by French symphonic composer Koudlam. The exhibition runs through December 6th, 2009.

Heaven [Tomoo Gokita]

Following up on our mention about Tomoo Gokita’s solo show ‘Heaven’ at Honor Fraser here, the show opened on the 7th November. Kris Kuksi will open up his latest exhibition “Beast Anthology” at the Joshua Liner gallery this weekend. The artist’s large-scale work sees few equals in his approach to detailings and intricacies. His muted color palette bring forth an eerie aesthetic to his overall work with some interesting themes at hand. The event opening will take place between 6 and 9 pm on Saturday, November 21st at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery.

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Beast Anthology, an exhibition of new mixed-media works by the Kansas artist Kris Kuksi.This is Kuksi’s second solo show with the gallery.
Resonant with the times, Kuksi’s art contains both micro and macro dimensions. A scavenger of pop-cultural castoffs, Kuksi combines mass-produced“junk”—toy soldiers, plastic skulls, knick-knack figurines, and mechanical bits—into rococo tableaux. His intricate assemblages of small parts and large figures resolve into highly aestheticized totems with an air of neoclassicism. But unlike the idealistic fantasies depicted in art of the Belle Époque, Kuksi exposes the dark, crass, even mercenary underbelly of civilization.
The sculptural assemblages of Beast Anthology play broad riffs on a variety of morality themes. In The Temptation of St.Anthony, for example, the patron saint of lost and stolen articles is shown in a state of existential angst. Arrayed around this central figure are lost causes of every sort, from war-weary soldiers, to lost dogs and cows destined for the slaughterhouse, to detritus of obsolete technology. St. Anthony forms the towering pinnacle of this triangular composition; unable to intercede, he casts his doubt over the entire votive like the burnished pall of the work’s bronze-colored patina.
Almost hilarious by contrast, Gertrude Von Howitzerhen is a wry visual joke on blind faith and the eternal optimism of power. A chicken with a howitzer gun for a head is the large central figure in this multi-tiered scene of ruinous ecstasy, which includes robotic whores of Babylon and artillery of all shapes and sizes. Yet the spry, can-do spirit of this headless chicken is evident in the ladders, buttresses, and overall industriousness of the work’s meticulous construction. As the artist notes,“I get inspired by the industrial world, the rigidity of machinery…My art speaks of potentiality and motion attempting to reach on forever and yet pessimistically delayed…I treat morbidity with a sympathetic touch.”
Born in 1973, Kris Kuksi earned his BFA and MFA in Painting at Fort Hays State University and lives and works in Hays, Kansas. Solo exhibitions of his work include Imminent Utopia, Joshua Liner Gallery, New York (2008);Oblivion (with Richard Kirk), Strychnin Gallery, Berlin (2007); The Strange and The Fantastic, Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, Kansas City, MO (2004); and The Within, Fraser Gallery, Washington, DC (2003). Selected group exhibitions include Overdose, CoproGallery, Santa Monica, CA (2009); Paradise Lost, Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, Brooklyn (2008); and Flights of Imagination,Museum HR Giger,Gruyères, Switzerland (2006).

“Euphoria Left The Room”

Opening Nov. 21, Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery presents “Euphoria Left The Room,” a group exhibition curated by Judith Schwarzbart –curator of the Copenhagen Quadrennial: U-TURN, that seeks to question what fragments of avant-garde thinking and visual experimentation are still at work incontemporary art practice. Scion’s 4,500 square foot Installation Gallery in Culver City will host this exhibition,which addresses the fate of creative and visionary imagination, which through the 20th century was set free though a sense of experimentation demonstrated in Sci-Fi literature and film. Since modernism in an aesthetic sense has faded, “Euphoria Left The Room” explores whether those utopian ideas are really dead or whether a visionary spirit can still be found in contemporary art. Zaha Hadid [MAXXI]

London based Zaha Hadid’s deconstructivist style has made her one of the most in demand architects of modern times, creating buildings that are set to become icons of the future. The MAXXI National Museum of the XXI Century Arts in Rome is one of her most recent projects, the stunning 27,000 square metre space is Italy’s first contemporary art museum which houses both MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture. More than just a museum, the flowing design is actually a campus of buildings intertwined and superimposed over each other to give an experimental and versatile texture of spaces that can be used as libraries, cafes, shops, lecture spaces and much more. Initially best known for his performances, and increasingly for his object based works, Brendan Fowler at Rental, Fall 2009 continues the artist’s growth into the sculptural territory of an interdisciplinary practice. Framed photographs and silkscreened prints crash in violent compositions that Fowler began as an attempt to capture the percussive rhythms of free jazz. As an undergrad, Fowler studied free jazz alongside printmaking, and now, more than twelve years later, he marries the two out of the hope that free jazz, as a form, will inform his practice and serve as an opening in his work. After a considerable hiatus from his focus, it is a rhythm, which has, in recent years, come back to his work in earnest.

Curated by Matt Small, it features a terrific line up of international artists (see a partial list below), each of whom has contributed work based on the theme of portraiture. The show opens with a private view at Blackall Studios, Leonard Street on November 5th.

The event is also a fundraiser for the SHP art projects, which aid in the promotion of social inclusion in London through the creative arts.

“Subcultural Capital” is described as the cultural knowledge and commodities acquired by members of a subculture, raising their status and helping differentiate them from members of other groups. Ronnie Cutrone, Rammellzee, Kostas Seremetis, and Romon Kimin Yang aka Rostarr, signal their membership through the distinctive use of style, spontaneity and popular iconography derived from their subcultural influences – and elevate as masters of their craft. Characterized by themes drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects, the exhibition, Subculture Capital integrates subculture and mass culture, pop art and post modernism. Using techniques that include appropriation, collage, painting, sculpture, film, and performance, these four artists individually refine and stylize their cultural influences, manipulating them into embodiments of personal compilations.

Subculture Capital opens on October 14th, 2009 and runs through November 15th at the Anonymous Gallery in New York City. An opening reception is scheduled from 6-9pm EST.

James Jarvis for New London

Beyond Eden Art Fair [L.A.]

For the second year running, the historic Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery plays host to a special event showcasing work from some of the city’s most exciting contemporary art galleries. Beyond Eden, an extension of 2008’s successful exhibit East of Eden, pays tribute to the increasingly championed new contemporary art scene with an eclectic multi-gallery exhibit featuring artwork contributed by Billy Shire Fine Arts, Black Maria Gallery, Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art, Copro Gallery, Crewest, DRKRM, Gallery 1988, Gallery Nucleus, La Luz De Jesus, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, LeBasse Projects, Subliminal Projects, Synchronicity Space and Thinkspace along with live outdoor painting by local artists.

Opening up their creative mind scape, Rodarte adorn the walls of colette with the latest inspirations that stand behind their collections. From Kim Gordon’s graffitied canvases with tags like “Pussy Galore” and “Noise Nomads”, a genuinely crazed fan letter addressed to Kirsten Dunst which has also been enlarged onto a poster that guests can take with them, Elliott Hundley’s crumpled up “Mom As Medusa” print, David Benjamin Sherry’s hyper reality images, and fairytale scenes by Karen Kilimnik of queens and fairies. Other than the walls there is also a curated shop where Rodarte's Autumn/Winter 2009 collection is on offer along with one-off or limited items like rag dolls made by the girls themselves dressed in Rodarte style garments. POP LIFE at Tate Modern

'Bomb It' Street Art

Mark Jenkins 'Sleepers'

Deitch Projects in New York City is currently showing Tauba Auerbach's Here and Now/And Nowhere, an exhibition which explores the collision of two conflicting states. The title (purposely composed as an anagram) reflects the artist's fascination with the origins of language, both verbal language and the symbols used in written language. The multimedia show includes paintings, photographic works, sculpture, and a musical instrument, all investigating the space between order and randomness.

War on L.A. River

BJD Resourcing — a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers subcontractor — was awarded $837,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to rid the L.A. River Basin of its graffiti. During its stimulus-funded clean up, BJD Resources painted over legendary graffiti artist Saber’s famed L.A. River Basin Masterpiece, which held a prominent place in American/world history as a Guinness Book World Record holder for largest graffiti piece ever painted.

Ryuichi Ogino

Tokyo-born-and-bred artist and illustrator Ryuichi Ogino continues to exhibit work both domestically and internationally with a new show at LeBasse Projects. This time around he brings us the latest in his ongoing series entitled “Idealistically Hypocritical 3″, combining elements of modernist illustration, text, sculpture and installation. The exhibition coincides with that of Hypebeast regular Edwin Ushiro, whose work is in the main room while Ogino is in the project room. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, September 12th between 7 pm and 10 pm.

"Smile On Your Brother"

Using original shaped skate decks as canvas’, artists across the world will put in their two cents in order to be a Contributor of this traveling art show. The “Smile On Your Brother” show, conceived by Mike Giles and Annie Lam and co-curated by Bob Kronbauer of Club Mumble, serves as a fundraiser for the 1.6 million kids living in poverty in Canada. The 50 custom decks, which are to be auctioned off, will raise money into providing 100 skateboards to kids, in hope of giving them some positive encouragement. The show, which is set to begin on the 24th of August, starts off its journey at Livestock in Vancouver, going through Momentum in Saskatechewan, Livestock in Toronto, Off The Hook in Montreal finally ending up in Quebec City at the Morgan Bridge Gallery.

The list of artists include Canada’s own Jeff Hamada (Booooooom), Chinatown Soccer Club, Parra, Don Pendleton, Thomas Campbell, Andrew Pommier, Mike Perry, Julien Valee and Bruxe Design among others. View the full list here.

Propagating Room Installation

Transforming her signature dot creations, Yayoi Kusama sees a new installation of her work being showcased at the COMME des GARCONGS concept space, entitled Six, within the brand’s Osaka, Japan flagship store. “Propagating Room” features a series of colorful dots projected throughout a variety of rooms, capturing the elegance of her designs through every inch. Paris’ Fondation Cartier has just opened a new exhibit, entitled ‘Né Dans La Rue - Graffiti’ (Born in the Streets), which displays graffiti - and its various styles - from its early days up until today. Artists taking part in the exhibit include such names as Barry McGee, JONONE, PHASE2, SEEN, QUICK and more. To give the exhibit even more cred, some walls of the gallery were bombed. The show runs until the end of November.

Releasing later today from Obey is a new Shepard Fairey print coinciding with the Detournements of Wynn Miller exhibit. It’s based on an image of a young Tony Alva and comes in two colours, each colour limited to 250. They will be selling for $80.
